Insurance Commissioner Shares Tips for Wisconsinites Impacted by Storm Damage
Madison, Wis. – Insurance Commissioner Nathan Houdek is sharing tips and reminders for Wisconsinites who may have experienced property damage from this week's severe storms.
“Last night's storms had a devastating impact across the state, leaving many homes, farms, and businesses severely damaged," said Governor Tony Evers. “I'm grateful for the responders and volunteers who've stepped up to keep our communities safe and support our neighbors during and immediately after the storm, and our state agencies, including the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance, are available to assist Wisconsinites as they navigate insurance claims, repairs, and rebuilding."
OCI recommends that consumers consider the following tips as they evaluate any storm damage:
- Make a list of damaged items, including cracks in walls, damage to siding or shingles, spoiled food due to a long-term power outage, etc.
- Take photographs of the damages before you begin to clean up.
- Don't throw out any damaged property without the claim adjuster's agreement.
- Keep all receipts that document the cost of the repairs or the replacement of damaged items.
“If your area experienced less severe hail or high winds, we still encourage you to inspect your property carefully for signs of indentation in vehicles, loose shingles or siding, or other damage that weakens your home and property that could put you at risk for more severe losses in the future," said Commissioner Houdek. “If you experienced any damage, notify your insurance agent or company right away to begin the claim process."
