Date: November 21, 2006 Beware of Deer on Wisconsin Roads Madison, WIAs the holiday travel season fast approaches, the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance reminds consumers to review their auto insurance policy to make sure they have coverage for deer hits. "Many people are not aware that the collision coverage under an automobile insurance policy does not cover you if you hit a deer," said Jorge Gomez, Commissioner of Insurance. "Only auto insurance policies that have comprehensive coverage will cover damage your car sustains from deer hits." Deer hits and other auto-animal collisions are covered under the comprehensive coverage of an auto policy. This optional coverage is found in the section entitled "Coverage for Damage to Your Auto." Comprehensive coverage provides financial protection beyond that of collision coverage, including hail, theft, falling objects, and deer hits. Drivers should call their insurance company or agent and check their policies to see if they have comprehensive auto coverage. Deer are the third most commonly struck object in Wisconsin (after auto-auto collisions and collisions with a fixed object). According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation a total of 17,555 deer-vehicle crashes were reported last year. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the OCI encourage Wisconsin's drivers to be aware of the increased chance of hitting deer in the coming month and take the proper precautions. Drivers are encouraged to heed the following suggestions:
