Wisconsin Auto Insurance Rates Among the Cheapest in the U.S.

Madison, WI--Wisconsin continues to enjoy some of the lowest automobile insurance rates in the country. That is according to a 2001 update of a study released by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) in 2000. The study, which included the District of Columbia, ranked Wisconsin fifth lowest in the nation for auto insurance rates. The rank is based on the average premium cost of personal auto insurance in each state.

"Wisconsin drivers should be applauded for their role in continuing low-cost auto insurance rates in Wisconsin," Gov. Scott McCallum said. "Wisconsin's competitive insurance marketplace and citizens' good driving keeps rates low."

The average auto insurance premium in Wisconsin is $604.82. New Jersey topped the list with an average auto insurance premium of $1,200.40-almost double that of Wisconsin's average rate. Iowa ranked first in the nation with an average premium of $543.44. Wisconsin has claimed the fifth spot for two years, while ranking seventh for the previous three years.

Even with the low average rate, individual rates for auto insurance can vary significantly from company to company. Factors such as the type of automobile, who the primary driver is and where the automobile is kept can influence rates. It is important that consumers shop around to find the best coverage at a reasonable price and compare premiums, coverage, exclusions, limits, deductibles, service and conditions under which a company might not renew a policy.

"Wisconsin's rates are competitive, giving consumers many choices but also requiring that consumers shop around for the best coverage and best price," Commissioner Connie L. O'Connell said. "Doing some research about auto insurance coverage can save consumers hundreds of dollars."

There are over 200 insurers licensed to sell personal auto insurance in Wisconsin providing many choices for Wisconsin consumers.

Information about auto insurance, including comparative information about auto premiums, is available in the 2001 updated version of the Consumers Guide to Auto Insurance, a brochure published by Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance. Copies of these brochures and other information can be obtained by calling OCI at 1-800-236-8517 or visiting OCI's web site at http://oci.wi.gov/oci_home.htm
